Prince Albert’s Parkland Ambulance responded to a rare incident on Saturday night after a man struck himself with an axe while splitting wood.

A news release said the 45-year-old patient hit himself with the axe when he missed the block.

Paramedics responded to the call at about 9:15 p.m. in the east end area.

They treated him at the scene and transported him to the hospital. He is in good condition.

“Paramedics respond to very few “ax(e)” injuries in the nature described above, but use of an ax(e) is a common tool for building a fire. Use of an axe requires a few simple safety procedures,” said the release.

Scouts Canada says these precautions include swinging in a controlled and balanced manner, inspecting the tool beforehand to ensure there’s nothing loose and making sure the blade is sharp.
