Digital farming: How farmers are using data to track results and make decisions this harvest season

Harvest is here! We all know that harvest can be a busy and stressful time, but with today’s digital tools, farmers are better able to track, share and analyze the results from the year’s harvest easily and effectively.

For farmers using tools like FieldView, the flagship digital farming product from Bayer, it’s easy to track yield results and break that data down even further by field/region. It’s as simple as plugging in the paired FieldView drive to the combine and the tool will be able to automatically track yield data as you harvest, with the ability to share live data with trusted advisors.

Being able to access and track data more accurately and effectively during harvest and throughout the year allows for better insights and decision making. With field region reports within FieldView, farmers can now break down data even further with field region reports by application, and by application rate.

This year, field region reports by application rate not only allows farmers to visualize how a particular application impacts a field, but they can also understand the rate at which that application is the most effective in a given field. Instead of just comparing different tank mixes, they can now compare how application rates impact their return on investment. For example, they can take this information to understand how different rates of a fungicide, insecticide, fertility, or other in-season applications impact ROI.

This powerful tool can help growers understand how management practices impact yield results across their whole operation, instead of just the results of one trial on one field during one season. At the end of the season, a field region report acts as a performance report that assesses the effectiveness of different agronomic practices.

At the end of the day, farmers need to make sure that every decision they make will have a positive impact on their bottom line. Bayer recognizes that no one entity is equipped to solve all agricultural challenges which is why they pursue partnerships and platform integrations that provide value to customers and make it easier for them to connect to the tools they choose to use.

FieldView’s platform integration with Combyne for example can come in very handy during harvest. Through this, farmers have the option to transfer accurate seeded acres and yield metrics from FieldView, making it easier to track the total bushels they have to market and associated marketing insights through Combyne, without needing to export, upload, and enter their data twice.

With more accurate data integrations, farmers are able to make up-to-date crop marketing decisions, and can better manage things like how forward contracted they are, how much of their harvest is already committed etc.

Data insights are becoming an important part of modern farming. Collecting this data now at harvest can save farmers valuable time and help them make data-driven decisions based on their own farm’s performance and historical data to have better outcoming the following season.
