Despite one of their strongest outings all season the Prince Albert Whiskey Jacks dropped a tight contest against the Saskatoon Goats on the road Thursday.
According to Whiskey Jack Jordon Hrynuik, the Prince Albert side was short a few players while the Saskatoon squad had some top tier talent that would challenge any Division 2 player.
“They scored a lot of tries, but it was those experienced guys the boys usually know how to stop,” Hrynuik said.
“We were short that day and they had everybody.”
According to Hrynuik, Prince Albert scored nine tries, but couldn’t convert on any of their kicks.
“It was one of the best (games),” Hrynuik said.
“The set pieces went really well, the scrums and line-outs. I think we didn’t lose any scrums, we didn’t lose a line-out, and the boys just stuck in and played really hard.”
Even though the team lost, Hrynuik feels they can build off of Thursday’s performance ahead of Saturday’s matchup in Regina.
“The boys will know what to expect,” he said.
“I think we’re going to come with a lot of confidence and play hard.”
It’s that work ethic, Hrynuik said, that has been the key to the Whiskey Jacks success all season.
“We work really hard in training. We work hard on and off the field and try to keep going,” he said.
“We should be able to squeeze out a win or two before the end of the season.”
The Whiskey Jacks take on the Highlanders Saturday at 12:30 in Regina, before heading back to Saskatoon next Thursday to face off against the Kradgers. They return home August first for a rematch against the Goats.
