Sandy Bay is under a state of emergency for the evacuation of patients with health needs, with officials citing poor air quality and smoke from wildfires.

In a press release, provincial authorities said that about 70 residents – Health Priority 1 patients and their escorts – were bussed from Sandy Bay to hotels in Prince Albert. They were scheduled to arrive in the city Wednesday night, where Red Cross and emergency service workers were ready to receive them.

Sandy Bay is about 340 km northeast of Prince Albert. It sits at the end of a highway leading through Pelican Narrows, about 55 km distant.
