Winter Art Show guest curator maps out annual exhibition of local art

Zachari Logan says taking on the role of guest curator and juror for the Mann Art Gallery’s (MAG) Winter Festival Juried Art Show and Sale is a challenge and an opportunity.

“I do some independent curatorial projects, nothing quite like this where the work is already here and I’m sort of having to deal with it in space and sort of rope together potential narratives,” he said.

“I feel like the works have these connections to nature, to ecology, to those sort of ideas. Even mythology or dreamscapes or the inside of one’s mind. That’s not always the intention for every work, but I see those linkages happening.”

On Tuesday morning the Saskatoon-born artist and University of Regina art instructor traveled to the MAG to create a single, cohesive exhibit out of 225 paintings, photographs, sculptures, fibre art and mixed media pieces submitted by more than 100 area artists.

“(They’re) very strong, technically,” Logan said of this year’s crop of artwork.

“There’s several pieces that I was like, ‘Oh, I want to take that home with me.’”
