Saskatoon flour mill fire caused by machine malfunction

Fire department investigators say the cause of a Jan. 12 fire at the flour mill on 33rd Street East was accidental and originated with a malfunction in a piece on machinery on the fourth floor.

Saskatoon fire department investigators say a fire at the flour mill at 75 33rd Street East in Saskatoon, on Jan. 12, 2024 originated with a malfunction in a piece on machinery on the fourth floor of the structure and spread through the mill process piping to the sixth floor, which sustained considerable damage.

The blaze spread through the mill process piping to the sixth floor, which sustained considerable damage, the fire department reported in a news release on Tuesday.

Total damages are still be assessed, but the fire investigator estimates the value at more than $5 million, the release said.

Flames were reported at P&H Milling around 9:30 a.m. Firefighters braved frigid temperatures hovering around -36C and brought the blaze under control by mid-afternoon.
