The Prince Albert Raiders are mourning the loss of one of their own.
Ron Gunville, a Prince Albert product and the team’s director of player personnel, passed away peacefully at Victoria Hospital Tuesday afternoon while being surrounded by family and friends.
“The best parts of my day were spent with Ron either in our office or on the phone,” Raiders general manager Curtis Hunt said in a statement.
“We shared the same passion and vision to build an outstanding program from the ground up.”
Gunville, 48, joined the Raiders as an assistant director of player personnel in June 2013.
He moved up to take over the director of player personnel job in Nov. 2015 and played a key role in helping to build the roster of this year’s Raiders side, which is currently the top ranked team in the Canadian Hockey League.
Prior to joining his hometown team, Gunville worked as a scout for the Prince George Cougars from 2009 to 2013.
He also played parts of three seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Raiders and Lethbridge Hurricanes from 1987 to 1990, where he had 33 points and 233 penalty minutes in 91 games.
Gunville is survived by his wife Sherry, son Reed, daughter Taryn, father Chick, brother Trevor and family, mother-in-law Sunni Williams, and Sherry’s siblings and family.
Funeral services and donation details will be announced by the Gunville family at a later date.
