New MAG exhibit explores the links between works in the gallery’s permanent collection
There are more than 3,000 works of art in the Mann Art Gallery’s (MAG) permanent collection and each year gallery director and curator Jesse Campbell sifts through that vast assortment to put together an exhibition.
“There are so many variations that one can do with that size of a permanent collection, so I have a lot of ideas of shows that I would like to do because a permanent collection can tell so many stories, especially of a place,” Campbell said.
“Because we are a public art gallery … these assets also belong to the public in a way, so that’s why it’s important to show them and to share them with people.”
The MAG’s last permanent collection exhibit was spring 2015‘s Breaking Space: Works of Nonie Mulcaster. Campbell’s upcoming exhibit, Then and Now, features the work of 22 artists mostly from around the Prince Albert area. All of the items were acquired by the MAG in the past 23 years. An opening reception for the show will take place at the gallery on Friday, Nov. 25.
