Saskatoon sculptor experiments with metal and glasswork in multimedia exhibit

Paula Cooley has always been drawn to duality. Beauty and menace. Images and forms that attract and repel.

“I don’t really know where that comes from,” the Saskatoon-based potter and sculptor said.

“On the one hand my forms are quite elegant and quite sensuous but then there’s the creep factor to them… Things are not black and white and I think that just shows up in my work. A lot of the work is fairly ambiguous. It shows both the good and the bad.”

That dichotomy is evident in her current exhibition, Mix, which is on display at the Mann Art Gallery (MAG) from Monday, Nov. 14 until Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017. Aside from presenting sculptural work that appears both smooth and jagged, organic and industrial, the exhibit is also an exercise in mixed media.
