Saskatchewan golfers eliminated from medal contention at men’s amateur nationals

Team Saskatchewan came away empty handed at the 113th Canadian Men’s Amateur Golf Championship in Toronto this week.

Eight Saskatchewan golfers, including Prince Albert’s Cory Selander and Danny Klughart, participated in the event, but none finished high enough after the first two rounds to qualify for the subsequent rounds. Of the 265 participants only 75 “made the cut” to compete for a medal.

“I obviously did not play how I really wanted to play (but) anytime you get to come play for Team Saskatchewan it’s always a good experience regardless of the outcome,” said Selander, who along with Klughart shot 156 through two rounds.

“I just could not hit my driver into the fairway so it didn’t let me give myself opportunities to make birdies, which you need to do if you want to perform at the higher level with the guys that are there.”

The P.A. duo entered the tournament after winning silver and bronze medals at men’s amateur provincials in Yorkton last month and had hoped to “make the cut” and play for medals in Toronto.

“It was a good experience, I just didn’t play very well. I Just kind of hit it poorly off the tee and didn’t putt very well this week. Pretty tough to get away with on a golf course like that,” Klughart said.

“I think if I had my normal swing and was hitting it better I would have been close, but I’m not sure what happened. I kind of lost it for a few days… I’ve got some work to do to with that and hopefully I can get it back to where it was before.”
