Sometimes, when Isla Boucher sees a busker or a panhandler she asks her mom, why?
Don’t those people have jobs?
“Wow, you’re four,” Adreanna Boucher thinks to herself.
“Some people can’t work for whatever reason, maybe they’re sick,” she tells her daughter. “They need people like us to chip in.”
That’s why Boucher is taking her two kids on a walk during the Coldest Night of the Year, a fundraising event for the Prince Albert Community Meals program.
This year, on Feb. 25, Canadians are walking in about 110 communities across the country to raise money for local charities that help the homeless. This is the first time the walk has come to Prince Albert.
Prince Albert Community Meals is organizing the event to raise start-up funds for a new hot meals program. The charity formed after Share-A-Meal closed their kitchen in 2015, stripping the needy of their only source of hot and hearty food.
To help fill the gap, Community Meals volunteers started handing out sandwiches from a truck in front of the Margo Fournier centre. But they want to do more.
