Area archer aims to improve national ranking and make Team Canada in time for Youth World Championship

Sixteen-year-old Prince Albert club archer Ashlyn Scriven had a record-breaking outing at the 2017 Indoor Target Provincials at the Alfred Jenkins Field House over the weekend, winning the female cadet gold with 580 points, the most ever by a 15- to 17-year-old girl in Saskatchewan.

It was a good weekend for P.A.’s Timberland Bowbenders archery club, of which Weirdale’ Scriven is a member, with P.A. archers picking up nine gold and three silver medals. Thee other Bowbenders set provincials records as well: Brock Entwistle with 206 points at the Pre-Cub Male division, Tristan Moran with 590 points in the Senior Male division and Shelley Smith with 556 points in the Master Female division.

Scriven’s high finish will serve her well as she aims for a Top 3 ranking in Canada, which means a spot on the national team at the Youth World Championship this fall in Argentina. Fellow Bowbender Moran is expected to make Team Canada, although the roster won’t be announced until May. Right now Scriven is sitting in fourth and feeling motivated to make the team.

“It just makes me push myself harder to reach those goals that I’ve set,” she said.

“It makes you work hard for what you want.”
