An assault in Saskatchewan Penitentiary on Wednesday sent one inmate to hospital.

The inmate was released back to the institution later that day, Correctional Service Canada confirmed. The agency did not disclose whether charges have been laid, but said the investigation is ongoing.

“We do not tolerate violence in our institutions. Disciplinary action is taken and, criminal charges can be laid against offenders involved in violent incidents,” spokesman Jeff Campbell said.

“CSC examines each incident of violence to find out how it can better prevent and address these situations.”

Saskatchewan Penitentiary, located just west of Prince Albert, can hold 785 prisoners in minimum, medium and maximum units. The facility is still recovering from a major riot last December, which damaged a medium-security unit.
