After more than two decades of welding, Tammie Pawlust is looking to pass her skills on to the next generation of women.

Pawlust is one of several female instructors offering young women a look at life in the trades as part of the upcoming Women in Trades and Technology (WITT) workshop at Saskatchewan Polytechnic.

The workshop is designed to introduce skills like welding and carpentry to people who are interested in pursuing a career in the trades, but wary about the challenges.

“I’ve been in the trades for over 20 years. It is an awesome job for anybody,” said Pawlust, who serves as the WITT coordinator in Prince Albert. “I’m really pushing it for women because it’s an excellent option for somebody who doesn’t want to sit behind a desk.”

Pawlust said the workshops help “demystify” the trades for women, who sometimes have conflicting ideas about what’s it’s like to work in those professions. Many women are uneasy at the prospect getting involved, so Pawlust and her team of all-female instructors try to give everyone a bit more confidence.
