New plans coming for Destination Marketing Levy Fund

The City of Prince Albert is moving forward with plans to establish new guidelines for its Destination Marketing Levy Fund.

The fund draws roughly $300,000 annually from a levy placed on local hotels, with the money then being distributed to local groups organizing large-scale cultural or sporting events.

“It’s a good opportunity for us to get some more events here,” Prince Albert city manager Jim Toye said. “Some of these (organizations) haven’t been hosting for a few years because some of them did get something from the previous destination levy.”

On Tuesday, Toye made a presentation to the five-member Destination Marketing Levy Advisory committee about the new direction. He said they’re looking to implement a similar model used by the City of Brandon, with a few small changes to the formula.

Among them are new rules around application guidelines, which are designed to decrease delays and streamline the process.
