Things were a bit different when Leoville’s Mary Krushelniski started volunteering with the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region.
Back then she and other ladies hospital auxiliary members would hold bake sales, create food hampers, sell raffle tickets and grow produce for nearby hospitals and care homes. At 93-years-old, she doesn’t perform all the same duties she used to, but her support for volunteering is as strong as ever.
“I have to use my cane and my hearing aid and it’s not the same as it used to be,” Krushelniski said. “But, I still do it if I can once in a while. I help in any way I can.”
These days, Krushelniski will still bring flowers, visit patients and occasionally prepare lunch for social gatherings whenever its needed, and her efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. On Wednesday, she was one of more than 200 individuals recognized for her volunteer efforts during the PAPHR Volunteer Long Service Recognition Wards at Plaza 88.
It was a humbling honour for her, and one she was more than happy to do.
“I don’t want pay or anything for (volunteering),” said Krushelniski, who was one of three people recognized for 45 years of volunteering. “I enjoy doing it, so I’ve been doing it for older people. They enjoy when visitors.”
