Nadine Wilson is the latest area MLA to be acclaimed as a candidate for the 2020 Election.
Wilson was nominated Monday night for the Saskatchewan Rivers riding, which borders Prince Albert to the north. She joins Premier Scott Moe of Rosthern –Shellbrook and Joe Hargrave of Prince Albert Carlton as acclaimed Saskatchewan Party candidates from the area seeking re-election in 2020.
“I’m humbled and honoured again to serve the constituents of Saskatchewan Rives,” Wilson said in a phone interview Tuesday.
“I can’t say enough about the warm and gracious people that I represent. I’m honoured to serve as the next candidate for the Sask. Party in 2020. I plan to continue to work as hard as I can for the people I represent.”
Wilson was first nominated in 2005, and won her first term in 2007, defeating NDP incumbent Lon Borgerson. She was re-elected in 2011 and 2016.
She currently serves as the provincial secretary, where she hosts and welcomes ambassadors and dignitaries who visit Saskatchewan. She also serves as the legislative secretary to Scott Moe, sits on a human services committee and is the Saskatchewan chapter chair for the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians -Canadian Region.
“I keep my plate full,” Wilson said.
“I’m never going to work myself out of a job. It’s very rewarding and I love every minute. Not every day is a diamond, but it’s very worthwhile work and I’m pleased to be able to participate in any way I can.”
Wilson said she decided to run again because she loves the work.
“I really enjoy public service,” she said.
“It’s rewarding to be able to help people at the end of the day. I have nine grandchildren and I feel that if I do my part, they will be able to have a good quality of life as I have had in the Province of Saskatchewan. I just want to continue to work to make this province the best place it can be.”
Wilson said she is looking forward to working with hew “really great” campaign team and holding coffee parties to reconnect with residents of her riding.
“I find that’s an effective means of communicating,” she said, adding that rural politicians have the added difficulty of a large geography to cover, unlike urban representatives who have a smaller geographic area they represent.
“If (residents) have ideas or concerns o stories they want to share with you, this is a good time to do it.”
So far, the Saskatchewan Party has nominated several incumbents hoping to return to the legislature in the 2020 provincial election. Of those nominees, all were acclaimed except for one. Muhammad Fiaz won a nomination race in the constituency of Regina Pasqua on Jan. 7. Wilson was the 22nd candidate nominated.
The NDP has also acclaimed several incumbents, including Prince Albert Northcote MLA Nicole Rancourt.
One candidate, Troy Parenteau, has come forward to contest the NDP nomination for Prince Albert Carlton. Other candidates are expected to seek the NDP nod in that riding.
