One of the first major events of the 2021-22 curling season in Saskatchewan will be held at the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Centre.
CURLSASK announced on Tuesday that the 2021 Provincial Mixed Curling Championship will be held at the facility from Oct. 13-17, with the winner representing the province at the nationals in Canmore, Alta. from Nov. 7-14.
“Prince Albert had hosted the mixed provincials a couple of times in the past and they’ve done a really great job,” CURLSASK event manager Bruce Korte said.
“The volunteers are very experienced in holding events like this and the facility is great with a number of sheets that we can use, so it was a perfect fit for us.”
The last time the mixed provincials were held in Prince Albert was in 2018, when Jason Ackerman picked up a 4-2 win in the final over Ashley Howard.
This year’s event was originally slated to be held in Tisdale back in February, but that was postponed along with all other provincial playdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“There will actually be two provincial mixed playdowns next year,” Korte explained. “In addition to the one in Prince Albert, we’ll have another event in March 2022 at a yet to be announced location that will determine who will go to the nationals that November.”
With no playdowns taking place prior to the provincials, an open field with a maximum number of 24 teams will compete in Prince Albert.
“Registration will be done on the CURLSASK website this summer and we’ll be posting that information on our social media pages,” Korte said.
