A 20-year-old man is facing assault and weapons charges in an incident that left an 18-year-old woman in the hospital.

Police were called to the 300 Block of 20th Street East at about 9 p.m. Thursday for a complaint of a woman being assaulted with a gun. One shot was fired during the incident, but the woman’s injuries were not consistent with a gunshot wound.

The 18-year-old was taken to the hospital by Parkland Ambulance with serious head injuries.

Police Service Dog Febee was deployed to the area and she led officers to the 400 Block of 23rd Street East where a suspect was taken into custody without incident. Officers investigating the area found a gun in a nearby garbage bin.

The suspect is facing several firearms-related charges, along with charges of aggravated assault, uttering threats and breaching a court order. He was due in court Friday morning.
