For recently arrived immigrants, finding a job in their new country can be a daunting challenge.
On Wednesday, more than 100 of them were meeting that challenge head on.
Job seekers from across the city arrived at the Quality Hotel in Prince Albert for a job fair organized by the Conseil économique et coopératif de la Saskatchewan (Economic and Cooperative Council of Saskatchewan – ECCS). Although gatherings like this one are open to all Prince Albert residents, organizers say they provide a unique opportunity for the city’s newest inhabitants.
“There is no unique format where people can know how to proceed with an employment search,” explained Félicité Nibogora, an economic immigration advisor with the ECCS. “Everyone will come with what they know from their country, but when they come here … it’s an icebreaker.”
Nibogora said job hunting can be an intimidating experience for new residents, so the fairs are designed to make things as relaxing as possible. In an age of online applications, it helps create a link between job seekers and employers that can only happen through a face-to-face meeting.
