Home stands see mixed results for area SJHL teams

Susan McNeil/Daily Herald The Nipawin Hawks took on the Kindersley Klippers on Oct. 30 at the Centennial Arena.

The Melfort Mustangs split a home stand last weekend while the Nipawin Hawks and La Ronge Ice Wolves struggles continued which kept the Mustangs in second place in the Sherwood Division of the SJHL.

As of Nov. 1 the Mustangs are in second place in the Sherwood Division with a record of 10-6-0-1 with 21 points, three points behind the first place Flin Flon Bombers, the Hawks are in third place with a record of 6-7-0-2 with 14 points and the Ice Wolves are in fourth place with a record of 5-10-1-1 with 12 points.

The Mustangs lost their second game of a two game home stand 3-1 to the Battlefords North Stars on Saturday, Oct. 30 on the night they debuted their new third jerseys.

The North Stars led 2-1 after the first and second periods.

Lucas Ochitwa scored the lone goal for the Mustangs.

Jake Southgate, Holden Doell and Steven Kesserling responded for the Battlefords.

Joel Favreau made 23 saves for the Mustangs; Michael Harroch had 34 saves for the North Stars.

Melfort opened their two-game home stand with a 7-1 win over the Weyburn Red Wings on Friday, Oct. 29.

The Mustangs led 2-1 after the first period and 4-1 after the second period.

Seth McCullough and Trenton Curtis each had a pair of goals for the Mustangs; Marco Lopez, Boston Maxwell and Curtis Hammond added the other Melfort goals.

Drew Kuzma scored the Red Wings’ lone goal.

Newcomer James Venne made 13 saves in his first start for Melfort; Dazza Mitchell made 21 saves in just over 35 minutes for Weyburn; he was relieved by Jackson Fellner who made 11 saves.

Melfort opened the week with a 3-1 loss to the Notre Dame Hounds in Wilcox on Tuesday, Oct. 26.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first and second periods.

Wyatt Day had the Mustangs’ lone goal of the game.

Connor Nolan, Phil Fath and Blake Rasmuson responded for the Hounds.

Favreau made 22 saves for Melfort; Austin Elliot made 24 saves for Notre Dame.

The first place Bombers were in Melfort on Wednesday, Nov. 3, results were not available.

The Hawks lost 2-1 in a shootout to the Kindersley Klippers on Saturday, Oct. 30 at the Centennial Arena.

Aidan Bangs scored the winner is a two-round shootout for Kindersley. Logan Linklater also scored a shootout goal for the Klippers.

The game was scoreless after the first and second period.

Andrew Schaab had a third period goal for Nipawin.

Jaxon Georget scored the lone goal in regulation for Kindersley.

The Hawks’ Chase Hamm made 24 saves; Matthew Pesenti made 25 saves for Kindersley.

Nipawin opened the week with a 4-1 loss to the Millionaires in Melville on Tuesday, Oct. 26.

Melville led 1-0 after the first period and 2-0 after the second period.

Alex Johnson had the lone goal for the Hawks.

Zach McIntyre, Noah Wills, Jonathan Krahn and Charles-Thomas LaRochelle responded for Melville.

Dylan Lacroix made 28 saves for Nipawin; Alexis Giroux made 25 saves for Melville.

The Ice Wolves lost 5-2 to the Yorkton Terriers in La Ronge on Saturday, Oct. 30.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period and 2-2 after the second period.

Connor Abric and Gavin Mattey scored for La Ronge.

Enrique Fontes, Tyson Perkins, Kishaun Gervais, Tanner Sklaruk and Colby Vranai responded for the Terriers.

Xavier Cannon made 41 saves for the Ice Wolves; Kael DePape had 21 saves for Yorkton.

The Ice Wolves lost the first game of their two game home stand 5-3 to the Klippers on Friday, Oct. 29.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first and the Klippers led 3-2 after the second period.

Aaron Greyeyes had a pair of goals for La Ronge and Curren Wintonyk-Pilot added the other Ice Wolves’ goal.

Matthew Mazzocchi had a pair of goals for Kindersley, Ethan King, Jack Michell and Bangs had the other Kindersley goals.

Cannon made 42 saves for La Ronge; Brett Sweet had 21 saves for Kindersley.

The Hawks are in La Ronge to play the Ice Wolves on Friday, Nov. 5. The Hawks then host the Ice Wolves on Saturday, Nov. 6.
