Highway 3 Baseball League set for inaugural season

An idea that came about last summer is now a reality.

The Highway 3 Baseball League will kick off their inaugural season on Tuesday, June 15, with five teams taking to the field.

“There’s definitely been a lot of positive feedback from the people running the teams, the towns they are in, and the fans,” league board member Adam Morrison of Birch Hills said.

“I think all of us are surprised with the amount of excitement in all five communities, especially as a lot of these areas are historically strong baseball communities that haven’t had the sport in a while.”

The five teams that will be competing in the league are the Birch Hills Brewers, Humboldt Dodgers, Pasquia Angels (who have players from Arborfield and Carrot River), Prince Albert Royals and Tisdale Rangers.

“We had our league kickoff meeting back in August and we really got the ball rolling after that with teams expressing interest,” Morrison said.

Lance Alexander and Dillon Zuck are involved with the Royals, who will begin their season in Birch Hills on June 15 at 6:30 p.m. before hosting the Brewers at Andy Zwack Field on Tuesday, June 22 at 6:30 p.m.

“A lot of the credit in getting this league off the ground has to go to Adam,” said Alexander, who is also a board member for the league. “I’ve been trying for three or four years now to get some men’s nights going but we only had a couple of games until last summer. That’s when Adam and the people in Birch Hills got involved, which really got the ball rolling.

“We all want this league to do well and be part of our community for a long time, so that we have something that our young players can be a part of to stay in the game.”

While the Royals have a full roster for the upcoming season, Alexander says anyone that wants to play for the team can contact him via email at l.alexander@sasktel.net.

“We have enough guys right now, but you never know what can happen with injuries and real-life events,” Alexander added.

The Highway 3 Baseball League will play the majority of their games on Tuesday, with the regular season wrapping up on Tuesday, July 20.

The top four teams in the standings will advance to the playoffs, with the format for the post-season yet to be announced.
