Fall Family Fun Day exceeds expectations for CLC despite weather challenges

Despite adverse weather conditions in the morning, the Saskatchewan Conservation Learning Centre (CLC) hosted their third Fall Family Fun Day on Saturday, Oct. 5.

The event saw extensive growth in the second year as families came out to enjoy the fall activities. CLC community outreach coordinator Rachael Groat said the poor weather did not impact early turnout.

“Considering that it’s pretty cold and windy, we’ve already had about 130 people out in almost two hours, so that’s a great crowd,” Groat said.

“I think it shows that we as people from Saskatchewan are hardy and we’re willing to bundle up and still go outside and be at events like this so that’s great,” she added.

The event served many purposes including letting the public know that the CLC is in the community.

“We want to let people know that the Conservation Learning Center exists and welcome people out to the farm and show them that we’re here and a little bit about what we do,” Groat said.

The event is also a fundraiser for the CLC school program. By the end of the day they had raised $1,000.

Activities included the ever-popular Corn Maze and a bouncy castle among other features. There was also a storywalk featuring the book Just a Walk, which allowed families to read and get some exercise at the same time.

There was also a photo booth on bales of hay and a tractor set up to take photos on. There was also horse drawn wagon rides in the afternoon.

“This year we added a petting zoo, so that’s a new thing,” Groat said. “That’s really fun. We’ve got crafts here that the Prince Albert early years Family Resource Center is hosting, and of course we’ve got our food vendors and some produce.”

The photo booth and storywalk were moved to a new location because of the windy conditions near the corn maze.’

“We’ve kind of tried to move everything in out of the wind,” she said.

The start of the day was delayed an hour because of the rain in the morning.

Groat said the change in time did not cause any problems and the earliest people showed up was just before the start time of noon.

“We put it out on Facebook and sent some emails and things like that, so people seem to get the memo that we were a delayed start,” she explained.

She said that the rain stopped about a half hour before, which made the timing ideal.

By the end of the day, roughly 300 people had attended the event, Groat said.

She thanked everyone who contributed to the success including the Family Resource Centre and Keri Sapsford from The Backyard and Compost Corner, among others.

“We want to say a big thank you to the Prince Albert and Area Community Foundation. They gave us funding to run this event, so a really big thank you to them because that allowed us to provide these activities to our community totally for free.

The Saskatchewan Conservation Learning Centre is located roughly 18 km south of Prince Albert, just off Hwy 2.
