A short car chase turned into an even shorter foot chase thanks to Police Service Dog Daxa.

On June 26 at 6 a.m., police received a call from a resident that a vehicle had been stolen from the residence overnight. Shortly after responding to the complaint, officers observed the stolen vehicle travelling in the 700 Block of Sixth Avenuye East, operated by a lone, unknown man.

Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, by activating lights and sirens, however the driver evaded police.

Officers did not give chase out of concern for public safety.

The vehicle continued east on Fourth Street East, out of sight.

A short time later police were called to a complaint about a collision. WHen they arrived, they found the same stolen vehicle had crashed into a parked car. Witnesses said a lone man fled the scene on foot.

That’s where Daxa came in. The police service dog located the man attempting to hide in the yard of a residence int he 1000 block of Fourth Street East. The 21-year-old Prince Albert man was taken into custody.

He is charged with evading police, operating a motor vehicle in a manner dangerous to the public, failing to remain at the scene of an accident and possession of stolen property.

He is due in provincial court on June 27.
