Tournament a learning experience for younger teammates
Two Prince Albert curling teams spent the weekend at the men’s North Provincial Qualifier at the Twin Rivers Curling Club in North Battleford.
While neither of the teams walked away with a berth in provincials, for members of both rinks, it was a valuable learning experience.
“We didn’t play our best, but the ice was good, the facility was beautiful and the competition was good,” said Doug Phelps, skip of one of the P.A. teams that competed.
While northern qualifiers are old hat for Phelps and his team, it was good experience for his son, Logan, who threw second stoned for the rink.
“Half of my team could play seniors. We’re getting too old for this stuff,” Phelps laughed.
“My son plays second for me. To get him some experience at that level is good, because I think he’s like to continue on curling with some younger guys in the near future.”
While Logan Phelps is young – only 20 years old – he has 12 years of curling under his belt. This was his second trip to the northern qualifiers.
“It’s a good experience,” Doug Phelps said.
“It’s the highest level of competition he’s ever been at. I took him with me last year as well, to the same event. He’s got a fair bit of experience but not at that level.”
