The Creative Stitcher’s Guild opened their exhibit on Sunday in the John M. Cuelenaere Library’s Grace Campbell Gallery.
The group practices a variety of techniques, such as knitting, crocheting and embroidery. The projects in the exhibit include knitted hats and sweaters, cross stitching and quilts.
Their work has been displayed annually in the gallery for over 30 years.
President Julie McIntosh said members like to experiment with different materials to spark their creativity.
“We did two workshops this year. One of them we did a small project using silk ribbon, so it’s called silk ribbon embroidery, and the other workshop we made some felt tree ornaments,” she said.
Each year, they choose a different theme for the felt ornaments. This year they did tropical-inspired decorations, which are on display in the gallery hanging from a Christmas tree.
“What’s fun is we do a challenge every year. So every year we get a little bag of something. It can be a button or this year it’s a little wooden flower or butterfly, and the club members are asked to try and make something with it.”
It may not be the paintings you’d normally see in a gallery, but McIntosh still considers stitching an art form.
“I like to call it textile art. Some people call it a craft, but it is artwork. It’s just a different medium,” she said.
“We’re always looking for new members, new ideas. We have a lot of fun.”
The exhibit will remain in the gallery until Oct. 26.
The group will be selling some smaller pieces there during the day on both weekdays and weekends. Otherwise, the gallery won’t be open.
