Cooke Municipal Ladies Golf Club returns after year absence

Like many athletic organizations and leagues during the last year, the COVID-19 pandemic led to the Cooke Municipal Ladies Golf Club to not happen in 2020.

Following a year’s absence, the club returned to the 18-hole facility on Tuesday morning to start their season.

“By the time all of the COVID-19 protocols that were put in place early in the pandemic were winding down, our year was pretty much over,” member Margaret Duncombe said following the club’s first round of 2021.

“We have a group of 35 women and we play every Tuesday morning. It’s intended for fun and we mix up the groups so that we don’t end up playing with the same people each week.”

While the club does feature many women who have retired, Duncombe is quick to point that it’s not a senior ladies league.

“We have a wide range of different backgrounds and ages,” Duncombe added. “The club is available for anyone that wants to golf and we think there might be more people that have Tuesday mornings available for them to golf now as a result of this last year, as more people are working from home and things of that nature.

“I know at the golf course (Cooke Municipal), they found a lot more people were taking up the game over this last year. We would love to see more young girls participate in golf, especially at the junior level. It’s a great sport to get involved in at a young age, as you get lessons as a junior and have really good access to the course.”

The club, which runs through the end of September, costs $95 to take part in.

“Part of that membership goes to Golf Canada and Golf Saskatchewan, which also helps to determine your handicap, and the other part of that membership fee goes towards the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club,” Duncombe said.
