Mental Health issues dominate NDP health forum

At eight years old, Kara Thorpe’s son is already suffering mental health issues.

The problems range from panic attacks to self-harm, with Thorpe was eventually being forced to take him to a psychiatric ward after he tried to jump out of a moving car.

Thorpe’s problems are difficult, and she said the lack of health services in Prince Albert is adding to her problems.

“We can’t get services around here. We just can’t,” she said. “We can get medication, but we can’t really get more than that.”

Thorpe was one of more than half a dozen local residents who spoke during a health forum organized by the Saskatchewan NDP on Thursday. Although residents raised a variety of issues during the meeting, mental health was one of the biggest problems speakers kept returning to.
