Body found following Saturday house fire and explosion

The Prince Albert Police Service is investigating a house fire and subsequent explosion that occurred in the 500 block of 5th Street East on Saturday afternoon after a deceased person was found at the scene.

The police, who have not confirmed the identity of the person, are considering the death as suspicious and also said that the chief coroner’s office has ordered an autopsy.

The police are asking anyone with information or video surveillance footage from the area that was taken from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday to contact them at either 306-953-4248 or 306-953-4222.

Emergency crews responded to the fire early Saturday afternoon, with the Prince Albert Fire Department saying later that evening that an explosion has blown the house off its foundation and later ignited.

A pipe that was leaking natural gas was allowed to burn until SaskEnergy crews could shut it off.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
