Northern Bears set franchise records for regular season wins, points, goals
The Prince Albert Northern Bears wrapped up the SFMAAAHL regular season at home over the weekend with a couple of blowout wins over the Weyburn Southern Range Gold Wings.
The Bears defeated the Wings 13-0 on Saturday and 11-0 on Sunday, outshooting the visitors by a combined 96-21. With the successful weekend the Bears have now set franchise highs in 2016-17 with 22 wins and 62 points, eclipsing last year’s record season totals of 21 wins and 60 points.
The Bears also scored a season-best 134 goals this year, reaching triple digits for the first time since scoring 100 goals in the 2007-08 campaign. They allowed only 50 goals against, the fewest since allowing 52 in 2014-15.
“It’s a good way to end our regular season. We had a chance to work on a lot of things that we needed to just brush up on just like every other team does,” Bears head coach Jeff Willoughby said.
“I think the girls are anticipating playoffs. They have for a while but we just kept telling them, ‘You have to get through your schedule first, no matter how anxious you are to start playoffs … you have to get through your regular season.’ And we feel good. We had lots of good team accomplishments this year.”
