A victim of a kidnapping at gunpoint has escaped without any physical injuries after the suspect lost control of the shotgun and shot himself in the leg.
On Nov. 7 a 4:20 a.m., Warman RCMP received a complaint from a person who claimed they had been threatened at gunpoint while at a Saskatoon gas station. The victim alleged that a man threatened him with a sawed-off shotgun and demanded that he drive both of them outside the city.
At first, the suspect allegedly made the vehicle owner drive, before taking over himself.
While the suspect was driving, he dropped the weapon onto the vehicle floor. As he tried to regain control of the shotgun, it fired, striking him in the leg and causing what the police describe at “significant injury.”
The suspect stopped the vehicle and the owner of the vehicle was able to take control, push the suspect out and drive away from the scene. The victim called 911 as he was driving away. The suspect also called 911 for assistance with his injury.
EMS and police arrived and the suspect was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
Marty Chamakese, 31, was arrested and charged with eight offences, including:
- kidnapping with a firearm
- Possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order
- Extortion with a firearm
- Pointing a firearm
- Possession of a firearm for a dangerous purpose
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
- Possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition
Chamakese is scheduled to appear in a Saskatoon court on Tuesday, pending recovery from his injuries.
