Incoming Prince Albert Raiders rookie defenceman Nolan Allan and forward Tyson Laventure got a head start on their 2019-20 campaign last week in Calgary as they participated in Hockey Canada’s Under-17 Development Camp.
112 players were divided into six teams for the camp, which lasted from July 19-26 and helps to determine who will be on the three Canadian teams that will compete in the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Medicine Hat and Swift Current from Nov. 2-9.
Allan and Laventure, who were the Raiders first and second round picks in the 2018 WHL Draft, were held off of the scoresheet in their three games.
Forward Kaleb Lawrence, who was a second round pick by the Owen Sound Attack in the 2019 OHL Draft, led the camp in scoring with seven points.
Raiders forwards Jakob Brook and Ozzy Wiesblatt, along with blueliner Kaiden Guhle, are currently in Calgary and are vying to make Canada’s roster for the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
Brook has one goal in two games heading into the third and final scrimmage Tuesday morning, while Guhle and Wiesblatt have yet to record a point.
Canada’s team is expected to be announced tomorrow ahead of the tournament, which will be held in Breclav, Czech Republic and Piestany, Slovakia from Aug. 5-10.
Meanwhile, Prince Albert product and Brandon Wheat Kings blueliner Braden Schneider is in Plymouth, Mich. for the 2019 World Junior Summer Showcase, which runs until Saturday.
Raiders forward Cole Fonstad was to have taken part in the camp, but was unable to participate for an undisclosed reason.
