Duo bringing performance of Mozart sonatas to P.A. Saturday

An accomplished violinist and pianist are teaming up this weekend to bring the music of Mozart to Prince Albert.

Martha Kashap and Renée de Moissac have been travelling the province performing Mozart’s 19 violin sonatas. This weekend is the last of their tour, and they thought they’d bring a show up to Prince Albert.

The pair are well-known in the local music scene. Kashap served as assistant concertmaster at the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra for about 25 years, and de Moissac is the organist in Saskatoon at Christ Church Anglican and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

“She’s just an amazing pianist,” Kashap said.

The pair launched the project after looking through the pieces last summer.

“We thought it was great. We really clicked as a duo,” Kashap said. “We weren’t quite ready to perform them last year, but this fall we’ve planned to do it. We love the music.”

The duo aren’t the only ones with a passion of Mozart. They took their performance to a care home in Meadow Lake to play for about 10 minutes. They ended up staying for an hour.

“It’s beautiful music,” Kashap said.

“It’s so clear and takes good chops to pull it off. We’ve had a great time doing the first 15 (sonatas) or so, and we’re really loving it. Mozart is for everybody.”

The P.A. stop is the second to last for the touring musicians. Their show is at St. Alban’s Cathedral, 1410 Bishop McLean Crescent at 7:30 p.m. tonight. Tickets are available at the door for $20 per adult and $10 per student.

The duo will also debut at St. Peter’s Abbey in Muenster, Sask. Sunday at 3 p.m.

Kashap hopes to get as many people to attend as possible.

She said even hearing de Moissac’s piano accompaniment is worth the price of admission.

“A lot of these sonatas are like little piano concertos Some are especially demanding on the piano, and she’s great,” Kashap said.
