New music teacher makes her St. Mary directorial debut at annual Christmas show
After the final notes of the Hallelujah Chorus ring out and the curtain falls at the annual St. Mary High School Christmas Concert, music teacher Erika Rybinski is hoping that audience members stick around, visit with one another and bask in the spirit of Christmas.
“I’m hoping to have dainties, desserts and … beverages after the concert so that people can talk with one another and just to create an atmosphere of joy, really, because I am so joyful about what I do and I want other people to experience that joy as well,” Rybinski said.
St. Mary’s yearly Christmas Concert is taking place in the school lecture theatre on Friday, Dec. 16. The show will feature around 150 students from the glee club, chamber choir, jazz ensemble and Grade 9, 10 and senior bands.
“There’s a lot of excitement and preparation all the way up until the baton drops for the first song,” Rybinski said.
This is Rybinski’s first year at St. Mary and her first time planning a school concert on her own. She said it was a big adjustment joining the school in the fall after spending last year at the less-populated Blessed Marie Rivier Catholic School, but she was expecting a challenge.
