Duran Bird’s favourite thing about WE Day was the big green laser lights.
“There was like this one laser part and I liked that,” the Grade 5 Westview student said.
His classmates in Paula Thiesen’s class agreed. But they also learned a lot about the harsh realities of life – drug use, war, poverty – and how they can make a difference.
WE Day, a charity rally that promotes youth engagement, brought together speakers and musicians in Saskatoon’s SaskTel Wednesday. The kids heard from two Saskatchewan Roughriders, country singer Brett Kissel and even the Prime Minister’s mom, Margaret Trudeau.
The trip was a unique opportunity for the students, who were in Grades 4 and 5. Most students who attend WE Day are in high school.
Thiesen’s class travelled to Saskatoon with Queen Mary students. She said it got her students “really pumped up.”
“When you were at WE Day you saw the power and the passion and the energy they have. When we get older we start to run out of that energy,” she said.
“The kids, they do have a conscience about what’s going on in the world.”
