Volunteers still needed for Esso Cup

Hockey Canada announced on Wednesday that the Bears will still have the chance to serve as the host team next year after April's tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Deadline to apply is Saturday, Feb. 15

With nearly two months to go until the 2020 Esso Cup takes place at the Art Hauser Centre, the push is still on to find volunteers to help out in hosting Canada’s national female midget hockey championship.

“It’s been slow and steady when it comes to people applying, but we’re not quite where we would like to be at this point,” Esso Cup volunteer director Candice Dawson said.

“We’re still looking for volunteers and we probably need around 100 still before our deadline, as we would like to have all of our applications in by Feb. 15.”

There are a number of areas that still need to be filled ahead of the tournament, which runs from April 19-25.

That includes ticket takers and sellers, 50/50 tickets sales, hospitality jobs, positions at the fan fest and roles in team services.

“The team services role is a little bit of everything,” Dawson said.

“It’s pretty much anything to do with the teams that are coming here. It could include helping the team with directions to find something, letting the coaches know where they need to go to buy a stick, or helping out with the team laundry or making sure that their snack tables are stocked. It’s a jack of all trades position.”

Everyone who applies for a volunteer role will also need to have a criminal record check, which is a requirement by Hockey Canada.

Bears return home this weekend

After not playing at home for over a month, the stretch drive for the Prince Albert Northern Bears season will get underway this weekend as they host league-leading Regina Rebels for a pair of games.

The two sides will face off at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Art Hauser Centre and again at the same time on Sunday.

The Rebels have a 19-0-1 record this season and hold a seven-point lead over the Swift Current Wildcats.

The 11-10-1 Bears, who are two points ahead of the Saskatoon Stars for third place in the standings, are currently on a three-game losing streak after dropping a pair of games to the Wildcats in Swift Current two weeks ago.

After being shutout 2-0 on Saturday, Jan. 25, the Bears fell 3-1 the following day at the Fairview Arena.

Kailee Peppler has the lone goal for the Bears in that encounter, while Dani Day turned aside 36 shots.

Following this weekend’s home tilts with the Rebels, the Bears will travel to Wilcox on Feb. 15 and 16 to face the Notre Dame Hounds.

They will then pay a visit to the Battlefords Sharks on Feb. 29 and March 1 before wrapping up their regular season slate with home contests against the Stars on March 7 and 8.
