Successful weekend for PAYSA Celtic teams

The Prince Albert Youth Soccer Association Celtic teams made their presence felt on the pitch this weekend.

At the Hollandia Cup tournament in Saskatoon, all five teams came away with medals from the event, which features clubs from around the province.

The Under 11 boys’ and girls’ Division I sides won gold medals, as did the Under 11 boys’ Division III team.

Meanwhile, the Under 15 girls’ Division II and Under 19 boys’ Division II clubs also brought home some hardware as they picked up silver medals.

“To have all five of our teams medal down in Saskatoon is a really big deal,” PAYSA technical director Dragan Ivkovic said.

“It’s probably the most popular tournament in the province as well, as you have teams from Saskatoon, Regina, North Battleford, Yorkton and everywhere else competing, along with our players from Prince Albert.”

This weekend also saw the first games of the season for the Under 13 girls’ and Under 15 boys’ teams in the Premier Soccer League, as they hosted contests at Carlton Park and Prime Ministers’ Park.

The U13 girls’ squad came away with 4-1 and 5-2 wins over Eastside Barca and the Aurora Rangers of Saskatoon, while the U15 boys’ side dropped 2-1 and 3-2 affairs to Lakewood Deportivo and Hollandia United of Saskatoon.

“I was pleasantly surprised with how the girls’ played,” Ivkovic said. “We knew they had the quality, but I was really impressed with how they performed in the two games.

“We had a few injuries on the boys’ side, but they still had some really strong showings, especially in our second game against Deportivo as they are the best team in the province.”
