Springer signs with Millionaires

Lucas Punkari/Daily Herald Dawson Springer celebrates after scoring a goal against the Swift Current Legionnaires at the Art Hauser Centre last season.

Graduating Prince Albert Mintos forward Dawson Springer could end up playing closer to home this season.

The 18-year-old from Rocanville has committed to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Melville Millionaires after spending the last two years with the Mintos.

Springer has also signed a standard player agreement with the Western Hockey League’s Swift Current Broncos, who he had a goal in two games for during the 2018-19 season.

After finishing second in team scoring during his rookie campaign in the Midget AAA ranks with 46 points in 44 games, Springer had 35 points in 44 games during the 2019-20 campaign to finish in a tie for second on the team in points with Winnipeg Ice prospect Chase Bertholet.

He also had four points in eight career playoff games for the club.

Springer joins Josh Peppler (Lloydminster Bobcats), Zane Florence (Battlefords North Stars) and Ashton Ferster (Flin Flon Bombers) as members of last year’s Mintos roster that have signed contracts with Junior A teams.

Ferster is also eligible to make the jump to the WHL on a full-time basis as he’s signed a standard player agreement with the Medicine Hat Tigers.
