P.A. high school students submit more than 100 works of art to annual High School Juried Art Show

Lana Wilson has a good problem: She has more art than she can hang.

The Mann Art Gallery educator received around 105 submissions for the gallery’s upcoming High School Juried Art Show, up from 97 pieces last year and 65 in 2015.

“It’s quite a lot more. It’s pretty fantastic to see more students wanting to submit their art and the teachers really encouraging the students to select work and really push them to show their work,” said Wilson, who is curating the show.

“We’re definitely seeing more works coming in so it’s always a challenge to find frames or to decide which works you do have the ability to frame and to show well to make a strong exhibition.”

The sixth annual High School Juried Art Show will be on display from April 6 to May 13 in the education studio and galley foyer, with an opening reception on April 6 at 7 p.m. It will be a joint reception with Saskatchewan artist Heather Benning, whose exhibition, A Prairie Gothic: Let our Fields be Broader, but our Nights so Much Darker, will run concurrently with the high school show.

“I’m excited for the students to have the chance to hear a professional artist who has shown internationally speak about her work in a really interesting context,” Wilson said.

Following Benning’s address, six awards will be presented to the young artists including Best in Show, Juror’s Choice, Creative Innovation and Artistic Achievement. At the end of the exhibition’s run a People’s Choice winner will be announced.
