Record setting night for Soyko in Bears opener

Lucas Punkari/Daily Herald Prince Albert Northern Bears captain Abby Soyko celebrates after scoring a goal in the first period of her team's 6-0 win over the Weyburn Gold Wings Saturday.

The captain of the Prince Albert Northern Bears now finds herself all alone at the top of the team’s all-time goal scoring list.

After lighting the lamp four times in a 6-0 win over the Weyburn Gold Wings to start off the 2018-19 Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League Saturday at the Art Hauser Centre, Abby Soyko moved ahead of Kelly Regnier for the most goals in Bears’ history with 52.

“It’s nice to reach that mark but I’m just happy about helping the team get the win,” Soyko said.

“I’ve been in the league a few years now so I’ve gotten a better handle of how things work and what to expect out there as time goes on. I know my coaches and my teammates are expecting a lot of me this year and I hope to play well for them.”

Soyko tied Regnier’s previous mark of 50 goals with a pair of power play markers in the first period and set the record on a breakaway snipe in the third.

She rounded out the evening by redirecting a point shot from Jessie Herner in the late stages of the game.

“I got to give my linemates (Jadyn Kushniruk and Paris Oleksyn) a lot of credit for those goals, along with the rest of my teammates,” Soyko said. “I just got in the right places at the right time.”

Herner also scored a goal in the contest while Jasper Desmarais opened up the scoring for the Bears.

“Our first shift was a little shaky but we picked things up as the game went on as we were able to find each other a lot more,” Soyko said.

“I think the practices we’ve had and the tournament we went to in Calgary two weeks ago have really helped us out as we all get to know one another.”

Lexi Beuker stopped all 14 shots she faced for her third career shutout, while Daneka Dickson made 35 saves for the Gold Wings.

The two sides will square off again Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre.
