Australian blues guitarist stops in Birch Hills during brief prairie tour

Australian blues guitarist Michael Charles is in Saskatchewan this month for blues festivals in Regina and Saskatoon. But while he’s here, he’s taking the opportunity to perform in some smaller communities as well.

“I always like playing to new audiences and new areas,” Charles said.

“Some areas are smaller townships and haven’t got the bigger venues or they haven’t got the population … I just like playing, doing my show regardless whether you’re playing a huge room or you’re doing a big blues festival outdoors or whether you’re playing in a little corner bar, it really doesn’t matter.”

Charles has already been through Moose Jaw and Yorkton, but Swift Current and Birch Hills remain on the radar for the musician. He will appear at the Mane Event in Birch Hills on March 9.

“I find it very welcoming because it’s so intimate and you get the opportunity to talk to people more than when you’re doing big venues or especially when you’re doing big festivals you don’t really have the opportunity to have that person-to-person conversation with people,” Charles said.

“When you play theses smaller (venues) you have that opportunity to sit down at a table sometimes at the end of the show and you talk and you make new friends and it’s a whole different atmosphere.”
