Mintos searching for new head coach

There will be a new face behind the Prince Albert Mintos bench when the 2019-20 Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League season gets underway.

The team announced Wednesday morning that head coach Ken Morrison had left the Mintos to pursue other interests and that the search for a new bench boss was underway.

“Ken was looking to try something different,” Mintos manager Don Fauchoux said. “Between moving to the lake, his work and being at the rink, it was getting to be a lot for him to juggle all of that.

“It was a good split as he wanted to try something different, but it’s never a good time when someone like Ken leaves after being involved with the team for a while. We wish him all the best.”

Morrison, who was the head coach of the 2014 Telus Cup championship team, was in his second stint behind the bench for the Mintos as he took over from Tim Leonard in February 2016.

Since the vacancy was announced, Fauchoux has been busy looking through the applications for the position, which is open until Saturday evening.

“With the amount of interest that we’ve had though, it might take a little bit longer than we first thought, which is a good thing,” Fauchoux said. “Our goal is to have everything in place before our spring camp (which runs from April 5-7) as we have a lot of kids coming to the camp.

“Our goal is to have someone in place by next Friday at the latest. That would be put us two weeks out from the camp and put us in good shape towards putting our team together for next season.”

Fauchoux also said that assistants Bryan Swystun and Victor Corduban are both welcome to return to the program for next season, but that will all depend on the direction the new head coach wants to go in.

Those looking for more information on the Mintos’ spring camp can contact Fauchoux at 306-961-3672 or via email at don.fauchoux@sasktel.net.
