Mintos drop road game to Contacts

The Prince Albert Mintos found out first hand why the Saskatoon Contacts are one of the teams to beat in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League this season.

After jumping out to a 2-0 lead early in the second period, the Contacts fired home four unanswered goals as they picked up a 4-2 triumph over the Mintos at Merlis Belsher Place Tuesday night.

Saskatoon Blades draft pick Alex Bernauer had pair of goals to lead the way for the 17-5-1-0 Contacts, who are tied for first place in the league standings with the Moose Jaw Warriors ahead of a home game with the Battlefords Stars Thursday night.

Blueliner Adam McNutt, who is a signed prospect of the Prince Albert Raiders, also had a strong outing as he dished out a pair of helpers.

The hosts also got goals from Connor Yager and Victoria Royals prospect Matthew Hodson, in addition to receiving a 21-save showing from Blades goaltending prospect Ethan Chadwick.

Blueliner Kayden Skulmoski paced the offence for the Mintos, as he scored a goal and helped to set up an Austin McLean marker.

Regina Pats goaltending prospect Spencer Welke turned aside 37 shots for the visitors, who now have a 13-10 record and are tied for fifth place in the standings with the Notre Dame Hounds.

The Mintos will return to the Art Hauser Centre this weekend as they’ll host the 2-21 Notre Dame Argos at 7 p.m. Saturday and at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Barring a miraculous run to the SMAAAHL playoffs, this will mark the final two meetings between the two sides as the Argos will be leaving the league following the 2019-20 campaign.
