An award-winning pianist is stopping in Prince Albert today as a part of his preparation for one of the world’s biggest piano competitions.
Saskatoon’s Samuel Deason, who now resides in Indiana, is preparing for the 15th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, which will be held in Fort Worth, Texas, from May 25 to June 10.
The winner of the entire competition walks away with three years of commission-free carer management valued at over $1.3 million.
But before they get to that stage, the 125 pianists will perform 40-minute recitals in front of a jury of judges. Only 30 will make the competition.
Those 30 pianists will compete in a further four rounds to choose the winner.
“It’s maybe the largest (piano competition) in the world,” Deason said when reached by phone Tuesday.
“It’s carrying the first prize of, basically a lifelong career in music, which is pretty cool.”
