An inmate at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert is in hospital after being assaulted in the facility’s maximum-security unit on Thursday.

The Prince Albert RCMP are investigating the incident. The victim was evaluated by staff and transported to an outside hospital for treatment. No staff members were injured.

Correctional Services of Canada (CSC) issued a statement on Friday saying the assailant had been identified and “appropriate actions have been taken” but did not provide any other information.

“The safety and security of institutions, their staff, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system,” reads the press release. “In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances of the incident and take the appropriate measures.”
