Victoria Day in PA will end with a big show at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre.
Multiple JUNO award-winning country artists George Canyon will perform on May 22, Victoria Day, in the midst of a western Canada tour that is taking the singer to major centres and smaller cities across BC and the prairies.
Canyon, who couldn’t fit a phone interview into his busy schedule, answered questions over email during a break in his busy schedule Thursday.
As the show takes place in a theatre as opposed to an arena, it gives a more intimate feel, something Canyon himself appreciates.
“I am not and never have been a fan of big arena shows,” he said. “I feel too far from the fans. It’s hard to have a nice visit when you’re 500 feet apart. For me, every show is a big kitchen party where I can tell the stories behind the songs and enjoy having a visit with my fans, who are like family to me.”
The P.A. tour date is sandwiched in between stops in Regina, Saskatoon and Winnipeg.
Coming from a small town himself, Canyon embraces the opportunity to perform in smaller centres.
“I was born and raised in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. Very seldom did any shows come to our towns,” he said.
“When I am presented the opportunity to play, I welcome all towns, cities and venues. We just love having the opportunity to play the show for anyone and everyone.”
Canyon’s most recent album, I Got This, debuted on Feb. 5, 2016, as the number one Canadian country album, holding that spot for five weeks. The title track and ‘Daughters of the Sun’ both made the top 10 in Canadian country radio.
The album was a bit of a step outside of Canyon’s comfort zone, but it was a step he was willing to take.
“We have had so much fun making this record,” Canyon said. “We could not be any happier with the response from Canadians coast-to-coast. The fans have been amazing, and the media too.”
Despite the busy touring schedule, Canyon’s been back in the recording studio, working on a new record for the past six months. He said the new single will be performed during his Monday show.
Canyon is looking forward to celebrating the Victoria Day holiday with the PA crowd.
“As a very proud Canadian, I take every opportunity to celebrate any and all traditions of our Canadian culture,” he said.
“May long weekend, Victoria Day, is another chance to get together and celebrate our amazing nation.”
Canyon’s show is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Rawlinson. Tickets are $45 and available at the box office or on the Rawlinson Centre website.
