Fonstad named WHL Player of the Week

Lucas Punkari/Daily Herald Cole Fonstad skates by the Prince Albert Raiders bench after his first period goal against the Saskatoon Blades earlier this season.

Cole Fonstad has been awarded for his strong performances for the Prince Albert Raiders.

The Montreal Canadiens draft pick was named the Western Hockey League’s Player of the Week Monday for the period ending on Feb. 10.

Fonstad, 18, scored a goal last Monday against the Edmonton Oil Kings and followed that up with his first career five-point night Friday as he found the back of the net twice and had three assists in a road win over the Calgary Hitmen.

The Estevan product followed that up with a pair of goals Saturday against the Lethbridge Hurricanes, as he now has 60 points in 54 games this season.

Fonstad joins Brett Leason and Noah Gregor as Raiders players who have been named Player of the Week this year, while Dante Hannoun earned the award while he was a member of the Victoria Royals.

The 45-7-0-2 Raiders will conclude a four-game road trip Wednesday against the Swift Current Broncos before hosting the Brandon Wheat Kings at the Art Hauser Centre Friday.

In other news, the Raiders dropped to second place in the Canadian Hockey League’s Top 10 rankings this past week.

They were surpassed by the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, who lead the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with a 47-7-0-1 mark and are currently enjoying a 17-game win streak.
