A doctor who passed away last year is being remembered for his dedication with a designated space in the Victoria Hospital.
George Gilmour passed away on September 27, 2017 at 80-years-old after practicing in northern Saskatchewan in many realms.
He was an ophthalmologist, specializing in the medical and surgical aspects of eye diseases.
Additionally, he was president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan and a member of the Rotary Club and the Canadian Red Cross.
George’s family and friends gathered in the hospital to remember his legacy on Friday afternoon.
Daughter Susan Gilmour, also a doctor, said her dad stood out in the medical field because of his focus on patients.
“He did make a difference, and he cared about this whole community and clearly the community cares back,” she said.
“Thank you. Thank you for everything, and we love you and we miss you dearly,” Susan said about what she would tell her dad if he were here today.
She said their family came to Canada in 1968 from Scotland.
Todd Buglass was also at the program, who was his ophthalmology partner for five years until George’s retirement from working at the hospital in 2001.
He said he’ll always remember the “Scottish twinkle in his eye,” adding “There was always a smile on his face.”
Buglass commented on how the past year has been without him.
“It’s been reflective, kind of allowed me to appreciate those years,” he said emotionally.
The exam room and plaque in George’s honour are located in the hospital’s Ambulatory Care unit.
