Spark Theatre brings ‘The Vagina Monologues’ to Prince Albert

Prince Albert’s Spark Theatre is wrapping up its inaugural season with a production that artistic director Roxanne Dicke hopes will get people talking: Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues.

“It’s a classic piece. It’s been done for a lot of years and every time it’s done it creates dialogue. It’s an interesting conversation,” Dicke said.

“Vagina Monologues is a piece, I think, that allows us to be pretty open and frank.”

The play is based on a series of interviews the playwright conducted with women from diverse backgrounds and different perspectives. The actors then recite those interviews as monologues. Dicke said the play “tackles the hilarious, the good, the bad, the ugly about how we perceive women but also how they’re sometimes defined by sexual parts. How it’s not acknowledged, how sometimes it’s over-acknowledged.”

The production will be staged in the Mann Art Gallery’s main gallery in the midst of the current exhibition, Saskatchewan artist Heather Benning’s A Prairie Gothic: Let our Fields be Broader, but our Nights so Much Darker. Dicke said the exhibit complements The Vagina Monologues because of its commentary on the role of women in society. She said she wanted an interdisciplinary show in which “one piece informs the other piece and vice-versa.”
