An event that calls itself the “premier gala for women in Prince Albert” is hoping to attract hundreds this year while raising money for cancer research.
Walking in Sunshine the 24th annual Canadian Cancer Society Spring Dinner and Fashion Show is set for May 1 at the Prince Albert Exhibition Centre.
The event raises money for the Canadian Cancer Society.
In addition to the dinner (catered by My Place Catering) and the fashion show (with fashions from D’s Rings and Things Boutique), the event features stories of survivors and a diamond dig contest.
“Cancer touches every family, and our objective is to raise money for research and awareness,” said Marj Somers, one of the event’s organizers.
She said three women will share their stories about how cancer has impacted their lives.
“That could be someone going through cancer right now, or someone who has been clear of cancer for five or six years, or somebody else, wh because of research, has found their cancer early,” Somers said.
“Just to inspire people to enjoy the night and spend their money on some of the fun events.”
One of those events is the diamond dig. Guests can buy tickets to dig into the diamond dig. If they find one some of the crystal beads, they will be entered into a draw to win the $2,000 diamond ring or one of many other prizes.
‘This year, the diamond ring was donated by a committee member in honour of her mother,” Somers said.
She expects the event to, once again, prove popular.
“We have averaged about 400 women every year, but we have broken 600. It’s pretty exciting,” she said.
“I’d like to break our average for sure.”
Tickets for the event are $50 and are available at the Canadian Cancer Society, 54 11th Street East, or by calling 306-764-4808. The event will be held at the Exhibition centre on May 1. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner served at 6:45.
